PATHWAY
How to get in
Four steps, in order. Skipping steps is possible but rarely recommended — every shortcut costs you on the back end.
- 1
Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering
University of Maryland, Oklahoma State, Worcester Polytechnic, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo run the most recognized programs. 4-year degree.
- 2
EIT → PE licensure
Engineer-in-Training after graduation, then 4 years of supervised work, then the PE exam. You cannot stamp plans without a PE.
- 3
SFPE membership + specialization
Society of Fire Protection Engineers is the professional home. Specialize in commercial kitchens, high-rise smoke control, or industrial suppression.
PROS & CONS
Honest trade-offs
What you'll like
- Office-based, stable, high-paying
- The cap on this career is partnership at an engineering firm
- Extreme long-term demand — every new commercial building needs FPE sign-off
What you won't
- 4-year degree + 4 years to PE = 8 years to full licensure
- Not a hands-on trade career
